Each PhD candidate, internal as well as external, should have a Personal Research Plan (PRP) and a Training & Supervision Plan (TSP); signed by the supervisors and agreed upon by the PhD coordinator. The PRP and TSP should be completed within the first three months in the PhD TRACK system and sent to the PhD coordinator, who receives them on behalf of the Dean.

Personal Research Plan

In collaboration with the supervisor(s), the candidate develops a scientifically sound and feasible Personal Research Plan, including a timeframe, which should be updated and discussed each year.

Training & Supervision Plan

The TSP is considered as a tailored and flexible plan that can be adapted during the PhD trajectory, according to the needs of the PhD candidate and the skills needed for the project. PhD candidates are also encouraged to attend international conferences to present papers or posters on their research as this provides excellent opportunities for contacts with other researchers. CAPHRI encourages every PhD candidate to grasp the opportunity to develop as researcher and professional during the PhD trajectory.

The TSP should be drawn up in accordance with:

  • The competencies that the individual PhD candidate already has acquired during previous education;
  • The skills and knowledge that are needed for the specific PhD trajectory;
  • The development into an academic professional functioning in an international scientific context.

This means that PhD candidates should learn to master both at basic and advanced level:

  • Methodological skills (quantitative and/or qualitative);
  • Statistics and analysis techniques (quantitative and/or qualitative);
  • Project-specific skills and knowledge;
  • English academic writing and presenting;
  • Academic skills, such as self-, project-, time- and career management, communication skills, grant writing, networking, etc.;
  • Educational skills, such as tutoring problem-based learning, lecturing, etc.

The CAPHRI director considers it very important that PhD candidates can participate in education and training activities relevant for their PhD trajectory and their personal, academic development. Costs for education and travel expenses can be paid from the PhD incentive payments that the supervisory team will receive upon successful completion of the PhD trajectory.
